Still Putting Myself First

We’ve been spending a lot of time downtown at the Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan this week.  (You can see my latest pics and videos here!)

Yesterday, we walked by the stage as they were drawing the morning’s raffle.  Mentioning a specific prize, my wife said, “if we win that, we should give it to the Joneses” (not their real name).   Although I agreed, I realized on the inside I wasn’t agreeing.  My first reaction on the inside was , “Wait! We deserve that! We should keep it for us!”  It sounds silly, and it wasn’t my out-loud reaction, but that was my initial thought.  It reminded me that I’m never going to be done with that whole dying to self thing.

It surprised me that I would have such a hold on something that I don’t need, and don’t even have yet!.  Being generous with this hypothetical situation would not even cost me anything!  Who would have thought that I could be selfish with something that isn’t even mine?  Ridiculous.

It actually ended up being a good thing, as it led to a great discussion as we continued our walk.  And yes, if we win that thing, it will be going to the people my wife mentioned.

Talk about transparency….we'd all 'know and be known' much better if we were this open…

Thanks for the honesty. I realized recently that in our lives we will have major (and minor) shifts in thinking if we are really being transformed. We don't have the Mind of Christ yet but should have paradigm shifts if we are going that way.
